How to Identify a Shot Blast Control Cage from Photos and Key Dimensions

This technical example uses an actual control cage and six measurement views. It shows what to record when the part number or original drawing is missing, without treating a tape or caliper photo as a final fitment decision.

Direct answer: when the OEM part number or original drawing is missing, a shot blast control cage can often be narrowed to the right design family by comparing several features together. Start with full top and side views, then record the outer diameter, inner opening, overall height, flange shape, body depth, and the control window's width, height, position and edge form. Add a photo of the part in the blast wheel, or at least the wheel model and machine nameplate, when available. One dimension is not enough. Two cages may share a similar outside diameter and still differ at the flange, shoulder, internal step or discharge-window position. The photographs on this page show a practical measurement sequence using an actual control cage, a tape and a vernier caliper. They document geometry for identification; they do not establish an OEM number, exact material or guaranteed fitment. Reliable matching comes from the combined evidence: photos, dimensions, geometry and machine context.

Real measurement example

Read the part before reading the ruler

A useful measurement set begins with a view that shows the whole part. On this cage, the flange, cylindrical body, machined band and rectangular opening are visible in the same frame. That makes it easier to understand where a measured span sits on the part.

The caliper view adds a second reference for the side profile. It is evidence of the measurement method, not permission to copy a number from the photograph. For an RFQ, the buyer should record the reading directly and state exactly which faces were measured.

Begin by checking whether the part belongs to the same broad geometry family. Only then compare individual dimensions.

Overall geometry

Start with the body, flange and locating surfaces

Before comparing small details, note the basic construction: a round body, the flange form, the cylindrical section, the inner opening and the discharge window. These features quickly rule out cages from a different family.

Outer diameter and flange diameter are useful starting points, but they are not interchangeable. Also record flange thickness, the shoulder or locating face, and where the flange sits relative to the body. Those surfaces matter when the cage is seated and positioned inside the blast wheel.

A top photo should be taken square to the flange where possible. An angled view can hide the shoulder and make a circular opening appear oval.

Critical identification feature

The control window often separates similar cages

Two control cages may look close in overall diameter and height but still use different discharge openings. Record the window width and height, its shape, the edge profile and its position in relation to the flange.

The window orientation should also be photographed. If an opening angle is known from an OEM drawing, include it as a reference. Do not estimate an angle from a handheld photo.

Opening geometry is part of the fitment review because it is tied to abrasive discharge and the blast pattern. A cage with the wrong window position should not be treated as a match simply because the body diameter is close.

Inner geometry

The inner opening is more than one diameter

Record the inner opening, but also look inside the cage. The internal cylindrical profile, wall thickness, steps, shoulders and opening-edge shape may differ between parts that share a similar nominal bore.

Wear can make an opening wider or less regular than the original form. Mark whether the tape or caliper touches a worn edge, a machined surface or a protected reference area. If the edge is heavily eroded, add another measurement from a less-exposed surface rather than presenting the worn span as the original size.

Write each value next to a simple sketch or a clearly labelled photo. The description of the two contact faces is as important as the number.

Worn-part review

Use less-worn areas as references, not guarantees

A used cage may no longer preserve every original edge. Look for a less-worn flange, protected locating surface, internal shoulder or area away from direct abrasive exposure. Those references can help estimate and cross-check the original geometry. They cannot always restore an exact drawing dimension.

Mark the wear

Show the most eroded edge and the area used as the measurement reference.

Keep both views

Photograph the worn area and a less-exposed surface from the same orientation.

State any repair

Note welding, grinding or previous modification because the old part may no longer show its original form.

Cross-check

Add blast wheel and machine context

Part geometry comes first, but machine context can remove ambiguity. Useful supporting information includes a blast wheel photo, machine nameplate, wheel model, wheel diameter, blade count, motor power and any old part number still available.

No single item on that list determines the cage model. Motor power alone, for example, is not enough. Use the context to check whether the measured cage makes sense for the wheel family and installation position.

What photos help identify a control cage?

  • Full top view and full side view.
  • Flange face and locating shoulder.
  • Inner opening and any internal step.
  • Control window close-up and its position relative to the flange.
  • Tape beside the complete part for scale.
  • Caliper on clearly identified contact faces where possible.
  • Part installed in the blast wheel, if available.
  • Machine nameplate or blast wheel model, if available.

When photos are not enough

Use the old sample for a direct comparison

If several candidate designs remain after the photo and dimension review, an old physical sample becomes valuable. It allows direct comparison of the body, mounting fit, opening position and reference dimensions.

Send a drawing if one exists, even if it is incomplete. A hand sketch that labels the measured faces is also useful. The aim is not to force a conclusion from one source; it is to make the different sources agree.
